Scripture Focus: Colossians 3:1-3

Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.

New Identity

When we come to faith in Christ, we undergo a profound transformation. According to Colossians 3:1-3, we are no longer defined by our past, our failures, or the world’s standards. Instead, we have a new identity in Christ. Being “raised with Christ” signifies our participation in His resurrection, marking the beginning of a new life.

This new identity means that we are beloved children of God, redeemed, forgiven, and set apart for His purposes. Our old self, with its sinful desires and worldly pursuits, has been put to death. Now, our lives are hidden with Christ in God, which implies both security and transformation. We are securely held in God’s hands, and our new identity is being progressively revealed as we grow in Christlikeness.

Setting Our Minds

Paul exhorts us to “set your hearts on things above” and to “set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” This call to focus on heavenly things is about aligning our thoughts, desires, and priorities with God’s kingdom rather than the transient and often distracting concerns of this world.

Focusing on things above involves

Meditating on Scripture: Regularly reading and reflecting on God’s Word to understand His will and character.

Prayer and Worship: Cultivating a prayerful and worshipful attitude that keeps our hearts and minds centered on God.

Pursuing Holiness: Striving to live a life that reflects God’s holiness and righteousness.

Embracing Godly Values: Valuing love, mercy, justice, and humility over worldly success and recognition.

By setting our minds on things above, we begin to see our lives from an eternal perspective. This shift in focus helps us to live out our new identity with purpose and passion.

Practical Application

How can we live confidently and authentically as new creations in Christ?

Affirm Your Identity: Regularly remind yourself of who you are in Christ. Meditate on scriptures that speak of your new identity, such as 2 Corinthians 5:17, Galatians 2:20, and Ephesians 2:10.

Renew Your Mind: Replace negative, worldly thoughts with God’s truth. Romans 12:2 encourages us to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. Engage in activities that help you focus on God’s truth, like Bible study and listening to uplifting Christian music or podcasts.

Live with Integrity: Let your actions align with your new identity. Make choices that reflect your commitment to Christ, whether in your personal life, work, or relationships.

Seek Accountability: Surround yourself with fellow believers who can encourage and hold you accountable in your walk with Christ. Share your struggles and victories with trusted friends or mentors.

Serve Others: Use your gifts and talents to serve others in love. Serving not only glorifies God but also reinforces your identity as His servant.

Embrace Vulnerability: Don’t be afraid to show your true self. Authenticity in your faith journey can inspire and encourage others who may be struggling.

Living out our identity in Christ is a daily journey of growing deeper in our relationship with Him and allowing His truth to shape our lives. As we embrace our new identity and set our minds on things above, we will find confidence and authenticity in who God has created us to be.
