How amazing is it that there is a car that can detect potholes? Unfortunately, for many of us, we do not have technology on our side.

Here are some tips on how to deal with potholes:

  1. Drive cautiously, and do not tailgate, so you have more time to see and react to any potholes you’re approaching.
  2. If you can’t avoid a pothole, slow down before you hit it. Don’t brake directly over a pothole as this can actually cause more damage.
  3. Properly inflated tires hold up better against potholes than tires that have too much or too little air.
  4. When driving over the pothole, hold the steering wheel firmly to avoid losing control.
  5. Use caution when driving over a puddle of water because it might be a pothole in hiding.

If you see a pothole ahead and can’t safely steer to avoid it, it’s best to slow down, then release the
brakes before you hit the pothole. This helps to reduce the speed at impact as well as give your
suspension the full range of travel to absorb the impact. If you can’t avoid the pothole, straighten your
wheel to hit it squarely and roll through. Hitting a pothole at an angle can transfer the energy of impact in
ways more likely to damage your vehicle.
