Let’s Read Luke 6:12-16

“One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God. When morning came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them, whom he also designated apostles: Simon (whom he named Peter), his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Simon who was called the Zealot, Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.”

When we face big decisions in life, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. We might feel uncertain about what choice to make or worry about making the wrong one. In these moments, we can look to Jesus as our example. In Luke 6:12–16, we see how Jesus approached an important decision: choosing His twelve apostles.

The Example of Jesus

Before choosing the twelve men who would be His closest followers and help spread His message, Jesus did something crucial: He sought solitude and prayed. He went to a mountainside, away from the noise and busyness, and spent the entire night in prayer. This time alone with God helped Him gain the clarity and guidance He needed.

The Importance of Solitude

Solitude means being alone, but it’s more than just being by yourself. It’s a time when you intentionally step away from distractions to be with God. In our busy lives, it can be hard to find this quiet time, but it’s essential. Jesus showed us that even in the midst of His important work, He made time to be alone with God.

The Power of Prayer

Prayer is simply talking with God. It’s a way to share your heart, your worries, and your hopes with Him. It’s also a time to listen. When we pray, we open ourselves up to God’s guidance and wisdom. Jesus prayed all night, showing us that prayer can be a powerful source of strength and direction.

Making Decisions with God’s Guidance

When you’re facing a big decision, follow Jesus’ example. Take time to be alone, away from distractions, and pray. Here’s a simple way to do it:

Find a Quiet Place: It could be a room in your house, a spot in nature, or anywhere you can be alone with God.

Set Aside Time: Make sure you have enough time to pray without feeling rushed. It might be a few minutes or an hour, whatever you need.

Pray Honestly: Talk to God about your decision. Share your thoughts and feelings and ask for His guidance.

Listen: Spend some time in silence, listening for God’s direction. It might come as a feeling of peace, a new idea, or a sense of clarity.

Seek Confirmation: Sometimes, God’s guidance comes through other people, Scripture, or circumstances. Pay attention to these signs.

Application

When you have an important decision to make, remember that you don’t have to do it alone. Just as Jesus sought solitude and prayed before choosing His apostles, you can find wisdom and confirmation by spending time alone with God. This intentional time of solitude and silence can help you feel confident that you are following God’s lead.

By making space for God in your decision-making process, you can experience His peace and guidance. Trust that He cares about your choices and wants to help you make the best ones. Solitude and prayer are powerful tools that can bring you closer to God and help you navigate life’s big decisions with confidence.
