Mark 1:35–37

Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed. Simon and his companions went to look for him, and when they found him, they exclaimed: “Everyone is looking for you!”

Starting something new or facing a significant task can be exciting but also overwhelming. Whether it’s a new job, a big project, or an important decision, we often feel the pressure to perform well and make the right choices. In moments like these, we can look to Jesus for guidance. In Mark 1:35–37, we see how Jesus prepared for His work by seeking time alone with God.

Jesus’ Example of Seeking Solitude

As Jesus began His public ministry of preaching and healing, He took time to be alone with God. Early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house, and went to a solitary place to pray. Even though He had many important tasks ahead, Jesus knew the value of starting His day with quiet time in prayer.

The Importance of Silence & Prayer

Silence and prayer are powerful tools that help us connect with God. In the quiet, we can hear God’s voice more clearly, gain strength, and find peace. Jesus showed us that taking time to pray is essential, especially when we have important work to do.

Resting in God’s Presence

When we spend time in silence and prayer, we rest in God’s presence. This rest isn’t just about physical relaxation; it’s about refreshing our souls. It helps us focus on God and rely on His strength rather than our own. Jesus’ time alone with God empowered Him for the ministry and challenges He faced each day.

Application Point

When you’re about to start something new or face a significant task, take time to be alone with God. Here’s a simple way to do it:

Pray Honestly: Talk to God about what you’re about to do. Share your hopes, fears, and ask for His guidance and strength.

Listen to God: Spend some time in silence, listening for God’s voice. He might speak to you through thoughts, feelings, or a sense of peace.

Rest in God’s Presence: Allow yourself to relax and rest in God’s love. Trust that He is with you and will help you with the tasks ahead.

Empowered for the Work Ahead

Taking time alone in silence and prayer doesn’t just prepare us for our work; it empowers us. Just as Jesus was strengthened for His ministry through His time with God, we too can find the strength, guidance, and peace we need.

Remember, it’s okay to step back from the busyness and spend time with God. In these moments of solitude, we find the rest and renewal that equip us for the challenges and opportunities ahead. By following Jesus’ example, we can face our tasks with confidence, knowing that God is with us every step of the way.
