Week 1

It is here! Today we are starting on a 52-week journey through the book of Proverbs. Let’s jump right in starting with Proverbs 1:1-7.

Proverbs 1:1-7 serves as an introduction to the book of Proverbs, a collection of wise sayings and teachings attributed primarily to King Solomon, although some scholars suggest that multiple authors contributed to the text. This passage sets the tone for the entire book by emphasizing the importance of wisdom, knowledge, and understanding.

Historically, Proverbs is believed to have been written during the reign of King Solomon, around the 10th century (950 to 700) BCE. Solomon is traditionally credited as the author due to his reputation for wisdom in biblical accounts, particularly in 1 Kings 4:29-34, where he is described as surpassing all the wise men of the East and Egypt.

1 The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:

for gaining wisdom and instruction;
    for understanding words of insight;
for receiving instruction in prudent behavior,
    doing what is right and just and fair;
for giving prudence to those who are simple,[a]
    knowledge and discretion to the young—
let the wise listen and add to their learning,
    and let the discerning get guidance—
for understanding proverbs and parables,
    the sayings and riddles of the wise.[b]

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge,
    but fools[c] despise wisdom and instruction.
