Living on Mission: Your Role in the Story
Key Scripture:
đź“– Matthew 28:19-20
“Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you…”
Main Message:
Becoming a follower of Jesus isn’t just about what God does in you—it’s also about what God wants to do through you. You are invited into God’s mission of love and redemption for the world. You have a role to play in the greatest story ever told.
Lesson Outline
✦ 1. The Great Commission
- Before returning to heaven, Jesus gave His followers a mission:
➤ “Go and make disciples of all nations…” - Sharing the good news of Jesus is not optional—it’s our calling.
- This mission is how others are invited into God’s story of salvation.
Have you ever wondered what your purpose is as a follower of Jesus? The answer is both profound and simple: you were saved to help others find the same hope you’ve received. In Matthew 28:19–20, Jesus gives His followers a clear command, known as the Great Commission: “Go and make disciples of all nations… teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.”
This commission wasn’t just for the original disciples—it’s for all of us. It’s a call to live on mission, to actively share our faith, and to help others become followers of Christ. When we do this, we become part of God’s bigger story of redemption, pointing others toward the hope, love, and transformation found in Jesus.
God doesn’t just save us—He sends us.
✦ 2. Your Story Has Power
- Revelation 12:11 says we overcome “by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of our testimony.”
- Your personal experience with Jesus is a powerful tool.
- Learn to share your story in 2–3 minutes:
- Before: What was life like before you knew Jesus?
- Encounter: How did you come to trust Him?
- After: What has changed since?
One of the most powerful tools you have for sharing Jesus is your own story. Revelation 12:11 says, “They triumphed over him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony.” Your testimony—the story of how God changed your life—has power. You don’t need a dramatic or perfect story; you simply need a sincere one. Think about how you would share it in 2–3 minutes. Start with who you were before Jesus, explain how you encountered Him, and share how your life has changed since then. This personal approach often resonates more than theological arguments.
Your story is someone else’s lifeline to hope.
✦ 3. Living as a Light in the World
- Matthew 5:14-16 calls believers “the light of the world.”
- Your everyday actions—how you speak, serve, and love—reflect Jesus to those around you.
- Whether at home, work, school, or online, your life can point people to Christ.
You don’t have to be a preacher or missionary to make an impact. Your everyday life is your mission field. Whether you’re at work, in class, at the grocery store, or talking to your neighbors, you have opportunities to reflect Christ. Matthew 5:14–16 tells us, “You are the light of the world… let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
Living as a light means showing kindness when it’s inconvenient, forgiving when it’s hard, and loving when it’s not returned. These small, intentional actions can open hearts and make space for conversations about faith. People don’t just want to hear the gospel—they want to see it lived out.
Sometimes the loudest witness is how you live when no one else is.
Next Step:
🔆 Live Intentionally This Week
So, what’s your next step? Practice sharing your story. Start with a trusted friend or family member. Write it down. Say it out loud. Ask God to give you opportunities this week to show His love and speak about Him naturally in your conversations.
The mission God gives us is not about pressure—it’s about participation. He invites you to be part of His ongoing work in the world. You’re not alone in this calling—He promises to be “with you always, to the very end of the age” (Matthew 28:20). When you live on mission, you discover deeper purpose, grow in confidence, and help others find life in Christ.
Discussion Questions:
- Why do you think sharing your faith feels challenging at times?
(Fear of rejection? Not sure what to say? Unsure if your story matters?) - Who in your life needs to hear about God’s love?
(What’s one step you can take toward that conversation or relationship?)
Conclusion:
You’re part of God’s greater plan. Keep growing. Stay connected. Live on mission. Your story matters.
As you grow, continue to take intentional steps:
- Spend time with God through His Word and prayer.
- Stay connected to a local church.
- Look for ways to serve others and share your story.
You are saved, planted, connected, and sent. And the story isn’t over.
