A CONFUSED GENERATION &
A CONFUSING WORD<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Few words in Christianity are more misunderstood than faith. Ask ten people what faith means, and you\u2019ll get ten different answers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFaith is believing without evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFaith is a feeling.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFaith is positive thinking.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFaith is trusting God for miracles.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFaith is saying the right prayer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFaith is mental agreement with doctrine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Scripture paints a far richer, deeper, and more demanding picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Biblical faith is not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

wishful thinking, blind optimism, emotional enthusiasm, intellectual agreement, spiritual vibes<\/p>\n\n\n

Biblical faith is trust that produces obedience. It is belief that becomes loyalty. It is confidence that becomes commitment. It is surrender that becomes action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This week, we explore the relationship between faith and faithfulness, the meaning of pistis and pistos, and what genuine saving faith looks like in the life of a believer. We will also learn how to disciple new believers into a faith that is not shallow, fragile, or passive\u2014but rooted, active, and enduring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WHAT IS FAITH? THE BIBLICAL DEFINITION<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The New Testament word for faith is pistis. It means far more than \u201cbelief.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Pistis = Trust – Faith is relational confidence in God\u2019s character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Pistis = Loyalty – Faith is allegiance to Jesus as King.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Pistis = Obedience – Faith produces action. Faith without obedience is not biblical faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Pistis = Perseverance – Faith endures trials, doubts, and suffering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Pistis = Surrender – Faith is not adding Jesus to your life. It is giving Him your life.<\/p>\n\n\n

Hebrews 11:1 \u2014 The Essence of Faith<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFaith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Faith is not vague. It has substance. It has evidence. It has weight. Faith is not believing in the dark. It is trusting the God who has proven Himself in the light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WHAT IS FAITHFULNESS? THE FRUIT OF FAITH<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Greek word pistos means: faithful, loyal, trustworthy, dependable<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Faith (pistis) produces faithfulness (pistos). <\/strong>

They are inseparable. Faith is the root. Faithfulness is the fruit. You cannot have one without the other.<\/p>\n\n\n

Jesus said: \u201cYou will know them by their fruit.\u201d \u2014 Matthew 7:16<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fruit does not save you. But fruit reveals you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

JAMES 2: FAITH WITHOUT WORKS IS DEAD<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

James 2 is one of the most misunderstood passages in the Bible. Some think James contradicts Paul. He does not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paul teaches:<\/strong> We are saved by grace through faith, not by works, so that no one can boast<\/p>\n\n\n\n

James teaches:<\/strong> Genuine faith produces works; faith without works is dead; works reveal the authenticity of faith<\/p>\n\n\n

Paul addresses how we are saved. James addresses how we live once we are saved.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

James 2:17 \u201cFaith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dead faith: says the right words, attends the right services, knows the right verses, but produces no transformation<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dead faith is belief without obedience.
Dead faith is confession without repentance.
Dead faith is emotion without surrender.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

James 2:19 \u201cEven the demons believe\u2014and shudder.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Demons have perfect theology. They believe in God. They fear God. They acknowledge Jesus. But they do not obey Him. Belief alone is not saving faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

HEBREWS 11: FAITH THAT ACTS<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Hebrews 11 is often called the \u201cHall of Faith,\u201d but it is really the \u201cHall of Faithfulness.\u201d
Every example of faith in Hebrews 11 is an example of obedience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Abel \u2014 offered a better sacrifice<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Noah \u2014 built an ark<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Abraham \u2014 left his homeland<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sarah \u2014 believed God\u2019s promise<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moses \u2014 refused Egypt\u2019s pleasures<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rahab \u2014 protected the spies<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not one example is passive. Not one example is merely intellectual. Not one example is emotion-based.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Faith acts. Faith obeys. Faith moves. Faith risks. Faith endures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hebrews 11 shows us that faith is not a moment\u2014it is a lifestyle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

THE THREE COMPONENTS OF SAVING FAITH<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Theologians have historically described saving faith with three components:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Notitia<\/em> \u2014 Knowledge<\/strong> – You must know the truth of the gospel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Assensus<\/em> \u2014 Agreement<\/strong> – You must believe the truth of the gospel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Fiducia<\/em> \u2014 Trust<\/strong> – You must personally rely on Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many people have: knowledge, agreement\u2026but not trust. Saving faith requires all three.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WHAT SAVING FAITH LOOKS LIKE<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Saving faith is not perfect faith. It is not flawless faith. It is not doubt-free faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saving faith is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Dependent: It relies on Jesus alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Obedient: It produces repentance and transformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Enduring: It perseveres through trials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Growing: It matures over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Fruit-bearing: It produces: love, holiness, generosity, forgiveness, humility, service<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6. Loyal: It confesses Jesus as Lord\u2014not just Savior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saving faith is not a prayer you prayed once. It is a life you live daily.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

FAITH VS. WORKS: HOW THEY RELATE<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Many Christians struggle to understand the relationship between faith and works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here is the biblical framework:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Works do not save us. Only grace saves.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Works do not contribute to salvation. Salvation is a gift.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Works are the evidence of salvation. They reveal the authenticity of faith.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Works are the fruit of the Spirit. They are produced by God in us.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Works are the purpose of salvation. We are not saved by works. We are saved for works.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ephesians 2:10 says: \u201cWe are created in Christ Jesus for good works.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

COUNTERFEIT FAITH: WHAT SAVING FAITH IS NOT<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

To understand genuine faith, we must identify false versions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Intellectual Faith – \u201cI believe in God.\u201d But no obedience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Emotional Faith – \u201cI felt something at church.\u201d But no transformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cultural Faith – \u201cI grew up Christian.\u201d But no personal surrender.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Convenient Faith – \u201cI follow Jesus when it\u2019s easy.\u201d But no endurance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Selective Faith – \u201cI obey the parts I like.\u201d But no submission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Performative Faith – \u201cI do good things.\u201d But no relationship with Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These are not saving faith. They are substitutes.<\/p>\n\n\n

HOW TO DISCIPLE NEW BELIEVERS INTO GENUINE FAITH<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Discipleship is not information transfer. It is formation. Here is how to disciple new believers into a faith that is real, rooted, and resilient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Teach them the gospel clearly <\/strong>– Many new believers know Jesus saved them, but not how or why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explain: sin grace repentance faith obedience identity in Christ<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Teach them to read Scripture<\/strong> – Start with: John, Ephesians, Psalms, Genesis<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Show them: how to observe how to interpret how to apply<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Teach them to pray<\/strong> – Prayer is relationship, not ritual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Teach: gratitude confession petition listening surrender<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Teach them to obey<\/strong> – Obedience is the heartbeat of discipleship<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jesus said: \u201cTeach them to obey everything I have commanded.\u201d \u2014 Matthew 28:20<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Teach them to repent<\/strong> – Repentance is not a one-time event. It is a lifestyle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6. Teach them to walk in community<\/strong> – Faith grows in: small groups, mentorship, accountability<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7. Teach them to serve<\/strong> – Serving develops humility and maturity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

8. Teach them spiritual habits<\/strong> – Scripture, prayer, worship, fasting, generosity, the Sabbath<\/p>\n\n\n\n

9. Teach them to endure trials<\/strong> – Faith grows through hardship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

10. Teach them their identity in Christ<\/strong> – New believers must know:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

they are forgiven<\/p>\n\n\n\n

they are loved<\/p>\n\n\n\n

they are adopted<\/p>\n\n\n\n

they are secure<\/p>\n\n\n\n

they are empowered<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Identity fuels obedience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A SIMPLE FRAMEWORK FOR EXPLAINING SAVING FAITH<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When someone asks, \u201cWhat does saving faith look like?\u201d you can respond:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Saving faith trusts Jesus alone.<\/strong> Not self. Not works. Not religion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Saving faith obeys Jesus as Lord.<\/strong> Not perfectly, but sincerely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Saving faith produces fruit.<\/strong> Transformation is evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Saving faith endures.<\/strong> It perseveres through trials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Saving faith grows<\/strong>. It matures over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6. Saving faith is relational.<\/strong> It is rooted in love for God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is not complicated. But it is costly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

FAITH THAT SAVES IS FAITH THAT LIVES<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Saving faith is not:<\/strong> a moment, a prayer, a feeling, a belief, a ritual<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saving faith is:<\/strong> trust, surrender, loyalty, obedience, transformation, perseverance<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Faith is not passive. Faith is not private. Faith is not theoretical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Faith is alive. Faith is active. Faith is faithful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the kind of faith Jesus calls us to. This is the kind of faith the Spirit produces. This is the kind of faith that changes the world. And this is the kind of faith we must disciple new believers into\u2014faith that is rooted in Christ, shaped by obedience, strengthened by trials, and expressed through love.<\/p>\n\n\n
