It’s easy to look at the world around us and simply think, “People don’t believe what I believe.” But the more I learn, the more I realize that there’s usually much more going on beneath the surface. People have questions, experiences, assumptions, and stories that shape the way they see the world. That’s one reason I’ve been interested in cultural apologetics.

Cultural apologetics is, in simple terms, learning how to understand and engage the culture around us from a Christian perspective. It isn’t about arguing with people or trying to win debates. It’s about listening well, understanding the ideas that shape our culture, and being able to explain why the Christian faith makes sense in the middle of those ideas.

I want to be able to do more than simply know what I believe. I want to understand why I believe it—and how to talk about it with other people in a way that is thoughtful, gracious, and meaningful. That’s why these next four books have caught my attention.

Confronting Christianity by Rebecca McLaughlin

Why own it:
A thoughtful and accessible resource for understanding some of the most common objections to Christianity. Rebecca McLaughlin addresses questions about sexuality, suffering, science, gender, other religions, and the exclusivity of Christianity with both intellectual depth and a gracious tone. It’s especially helpful for seeing how Christian beliefs can be explained without becoming combative or dismissive.

Best use:
Keep this as a go-to reference when you encounter difficult questions about Christianity or want to prepare for conversations with people who have honest objections to the faith. It also works well for small-group discussion or personal study.

The Air We Breathe by Glen Scrivener

Why own it:
Glen Scrivener explores how many values that feel natural and obvious in modern Western culture—such as equality, human rights, compassion, and the dignity of the individual—have deep connections to the Christian story. The book helps readers think about the cultural influence of Christianity and recognize the assumptions beneath everyday life.

Best use:
Use this book to better understand the relationship between Christianity and Western culture, especially when discussing why certain modern values exist. It’s also a helpful starting point for conversations with people who may reject Christianity while still valuing ideas shaped by the Christian tradition.

Making Sense of God by Timothy Keller

Why own it:
Timothy Keller makes a thoughtful case for why belief in God remains intellectually and practically relevant in a secular age. Rather than simply defending individual Christian doctrines, he examines deeper questions about meaning, identity, morality, justice, satisfaction, and human flourishing. Keller is particularly good at engaging the assumptions behind secular worldviews.

Best use:
Keep this one handy for exploring the “Why believe?” question. It’s especially useful for someone who is skeptical of Christianity, questioning their own beliefs, or trying to understand why faith might make sense in a modern world.

The Universe Next Door by James Sire

Why own it:
This is a useful introduction to worldview thinking. James Sire examines the basic assumptions behind Christianity and several competing worldviews, helping readers see how beliefs about reality, humanity, morality, knowledge, and purpose fit together. It provides a framework for understanding not just what people believe, but why those beliefs lead to particular ways of living.

Best use:
Use this as a worldview study or reference book. It’s particularly valuable for comparing Christianity with other ways of understanding reality and for learning to recognize the worldview assumptions behind books, media, culture, and everyday conversations.

Why these books together?

For me, these books are less about learning how to argue for Christianity and more about learning how to understand. I want to become better at noticing the ideas behind the conversations happening around me. I want to understand why certain beliefs are appealing, where they come from, and what questions they are trying to answer.

And then, from there, I want to be able to ask: What does Christianity have to say about this?

That’s what makes cultural apologetics so interesting to me. It isn’t just about defending Christianity against objections. It’s about learning to see the world through the lens of the gospel—and learning how to thoughtfully invite other people to see it, too. Understanding culture helps us understand the questions people are asking. Understanding Christianity helps us respond to those questions. And learning to connect the two is where cultural apologetics comes in.

Traditional apologetics often focuses on answering specific objections to Christianity. Cultural apologetics goes a step further by examining the worldview assumptions that produce those objections in the first place. Rather than simply answering questions, cultural apologetics helps Christians understand why people are asking those questions and what deeper beliefs may be influencing them.

In Colossians 2:8, Paul warns believers not to be taken captive by ideas that are contrary to Christ. His concern was not merely behavior but belief. He understood that ideas influence lives, and worldviews shape entire cultures.

The goal is not to criticize culture from a distance. The goal is to understand people better so that we can communicate the gospel more effectively. Apologetics is about helping others see that the Christian story explains reality more fully, offers greater hope, and provides a stronger foundation for human flourishing.

Imagine trying to share the gospel with someone who speaks a different language. Before meaningful communication can occur, you must understand that language.

Culture functions in a similar way.

People interpret reality through the worldview they have absorbed from their surroundings. Their assumptions influence how they view God, truth, morality, relationships, suffering, success, and identity.

If Christians do not understand the culture around them, they may answer questions people are no longer asking while missing the questions people actually have.

For example:

Several generations ago, an unbeliever might have asked:

“Is Christianity true?”

Today many people first ask:

“Is Christianity good?”

Others ask:

“Can I trust the Bible?”

“Why should I believe in absolute truth?”

“Who gets to define identity?”

“Does life have purpose?”

“Why should human beings have dignity?”

Understanding these questions requires understanding culture. Cultural apologetics helps believers:

Identify modern worldview assumptions.

Understand why people are skeptical of Christianity.

Recognize cultural strengths and weaknesses.

Communicate biblical truth more clearly.

Build bridges rather than walls in conversation.

A missionary studies the culture of a foreign country before sharing the gospel effectively. In many ways, Christians today are called to understand the culture around them with that same missional mindset.

Practical Challenge

This week’s challenge encourages observation and reflection. Identify one cultural belief and trace how Scripture addresses it.

Examples might include:

“My worth comes from my achievements.”

“Truth is relative.”

“Happiness is life’s ultimate goal.”

“People can determine their own meaning.”

“Success defines value.”

Choose one belief and explore:

Where does this belief appear in culture?

What assumptions support it?

What does Scripture teach about it?

How does the biblical perspective provide a better answer?

Write a brief summary of your findings and discuss them with a friend, mentor, or study group.

Reflection

The world around us is constantly communicating messages about identity, truth, purpose, morality, and meaning. Whether through media, education, entertainment, or everyday conversations, these messages shape how people understand reality. If Christians hope to communicate the gospel effectively, they must first understand the ideas influencing the culture they seek to reach.

Paul’s warning in Colossians 2:8 remains timely. Believers are called to think carefully about the philosophies and assumptions that compete for their allegiance. This does not mean withdrawing from culture or fearing difficult conversations. Rather, it means engaging culture thoughtfully, discerningly, and biblically.

Resources such as Confronting Christianity, The Air We Breathe, Making Sense of God, and The Universe Next Door help us understand the worldviews shaping modern society. They teach us to recognize underlying assumptions, listen more carefully, and respond more graciously.

Most importantly, cultural apologetics reminds us that Christianity is not merely a collection of doctrines to defend. It is a comprehensive explanation of reality rooted in the person of Jesus Christ. The gospel does more than answer objections. It offers a compelling story of creation, redemption, and restoration that speaks directly to humanity’s deepest longings.

As you continue your apologetics journey, ask God to help you see your culture clearly, love people deeply, and communicate the truth faithfully. The goal is not simply to win debates but to point others toward the hope, meaning, and purpose found in Christ. In a confused and searching world, Christians have the privilege of sharing a story that is not only true but ultimately transforms lives.

One of the things I’ve been thinking about lately is how important it is for Christians to understand the culture we’re living in.
