He calls this “the fruit of the Spirit,” which includes love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. We don’t develop these qualities just by trying harder. They grow as we learn to follow the Spirit of God.

This week, we’ll explore what it means to grow the fruit of the Spirit in our lives, and how doing so is a clear mark of spiritual maturity.

Walking by the Spirit

Paul begins this section by contrasting two ways of life: life by the flesh and life by the Spirit. The “flesh” refers to our natural, sinful desires—the part of us that resists God and prioritizes self. When we live according to the flesh, the results are obvious: anger, jealousy, division, selfishness, and all sorts of destructive behaviors (Galatians 5:19–21).

But when we live by the Spirit, something different starts to grow in us: the character of Christ. Walking by the Spirit means depending on God every day, listening for His guidance, and letting His power shape how we think, speak, and act.

Paul uses the word fruit for a reason. Fruit takes time to grow; it doesn’t show up instantly. It needs care and the right conditions. In the same way, the fruit of the Spirit develops in us over time as we let the Spirit work in our lives each day.

This is both encouraging and challenging. It’s encouraging because we don’t have to create these qualities by ourselves; they naturally come from a Spirit-filled life. But it’s also challenging because it means letting go of our own plans, pride, and old habits so the Spirit can change us.

Crucifying the Flesh

In Galatians 5:24, Paul makes a bold statement: “Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.” This is a strong image. Crucifixion is not a gentle process. It represents a complete and painful putting-to-death of something.

When we follow Christ, we make a clear break from our old way of living. We stop letting selfish desires control us. Instead, we choose each day to give those desires to Jesus and let the Spirit lead us. It doesn’t mean we’ll never struggle with sin. But it does mean we’re no longer slaves to it. We actively resist the pull of the flesh and instead lean into the power of the Holy Spirit.

Crucifying the flesh is something we keep working on. It means regularly checking our hearts and asking, “Where am I still living for myself instead of God?” It means turning back to God when we mess up and asking the Spirit to help us grow. The more we let go of our old ways, the more space we make for the fruit of the Spirit.

Bearing Fruit in Every Season

One of the best things about the fruit of the Spirit is that it can grow in every season of life. Whether we are experiencing joy or grief, comfort or difficulty, the Spirit can still produce His fruit in us.

Sometimes we think spiritual fruit only grows when life is easy. But often, we grow the most during hard times. Patience grows when we have to wait. We find peace in anxious moments. Self-control gets stronger when we face temptation. Love and kindness are tested in difficult relationships.

God uses every season in our lives. If we stay connected to Him, like a tree planted by streams of water (Psalm 1), we will bear fruit even during hard times.

Spiritual maturity is not just about producing fruit once, but about bearing fruit throughout our lives. It’s not about short bursts of goodness, but about steady, faithful growth over time. The Spirit keeps working in us and will keep shaping us to be like Christ until we see Him face to face (Philippians 1:6).

Invite the Spirit to Cultivate Fruit in You

So how do we respond to this teaching? How do we actively participate in the Spirit’s work of growing fruit in our lives?

Here are a few ways to begin:

1. Examine Your Fruit.

Set aside some time this week to think about Galatians 5:22–23. Which fruit do you see most in your life? Which ones need more growth? Be honest, but also stay hopeful. God is patient, and His Spirit will help you grow in time.

2. Invite the Spirit to Cultivate Specific Fruit.

Is there a fruit you wish you had more of? Maybe you find it hard to be patient or want more self-control. Don’t try to force it on your own. Pray and ask the Holy Spirit to help you grow in that area. Then look for small ways to practice it each day.

3. Stay Rooted in Christ.

Just as fruit needs good soil, we need to stay connected to Jesus. Spend time reading the Bible. Talk to Him in prayer. Be part of a community of believers who encourage you and help you stay on track. The closer you are to Christ, the more His Spirit will work in you.

4. Keep in Step with the Spirit.

Paul ends this section with a practical encouragement: “Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit” (Galatians 5:25). Ask the Spirit to guide your words, choices, and actions each day. When He prompts you to be gentle, loving, or patient, follow His lead. Questions:

What fruit of the Spirit do you see God growing in your life right now?

Where do you need to invite the Holy Spirit to bring more growth?

How can you stay rooted in Christ so that your life continues to bear fruit in every season?

Spiritual maturity is not about being busy for God; it’s about becoming more like Him. The clearest sign of this change is the fruit the Spirit produces in us. As we walk by the Spirit, put aside our old ways, and stay connected to Christ, we will become people who show His love, joy, peace, and more. This growth is not just for us, but for everyone around us. Let’s commit this week to growing the fruit that truly matters.

When we think about spiritual growth, we often focus on outward signs like going to church, volunteering, or knowing the Bible.
