Social media rewards those who stand out. At work, competition can be valued more than cooperation. Even in our personal lives, we may feel tempted to assert ourselves, protect our pride, or seek recognition. But Christ calls us to a different way. Spiritual maturity grows not from pride, but from humility.

In Philippians 2:1–11, the apostle Paul gives us a powerful picture of humility. He encourages believers to be united in love, put others first, and follow the example of Jesus Christ, who, even though He was God, chose to become a servant. Paul shows that humility is not weakness or passivity. Instead, it is the strength to give up our rights out of love for others and obedience to God.

Let’s look at what this passage teaches us about living with humility.

Christ’s Example of Humility

Paul starts by urging the Philippians to be united in love and to “do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves” (Philippians 2:3). He then points to the greatest example: Jesus Christ.

“Though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant…” (Philippians 2:6–7).

Jesus could have stayed in glory, but He chose humility. He left heaven, became human, lived in obedience, and humbled Himself all the way to death on a cross. There is no greater example of lowering oneself. Because of His humble obedience, “God highly exalted Him” (v. 9).

Jesus did not hold on to His status; He gave it up. He did not demand recognition; He served others. He did not fight for control; He submitted to the Father’s will. If we want to grow spiritually, we need to start with His example. Christ’s humility was not just a single act, but a way of life. We are called to follow Him in this.

Humility as the Foundation of Maturity

We cannot grow spiritually without humility. Humility gives God room to work in us. It helps us admit our limits and receive God’s strength. It makes us open to correction, keeps us willing to learn, and lets us live with others without comparing or competing.

Humility does not mean thinking less of yourself, but thinking of yourself less often. It is a heart attitude that puts God at the center, not ourselves. Humility helps us forgive, admit when we are wrong, and serve others without looking for praise. A mature Christian doesn’t need to be the center of attention or the winner of every argument. Instead, they seek to love others, honor God, and quietly live out the truth of the Gospel in word and deed.

Humility is what helps us grow. Pride says, “I’ve got this figured out.” Humility says, “Lord, I need You. Keep shaping me.” As we grow in faith, we see even more how much we need God’s grace each day.

Pride as a Barrier to Growth

Humility opens the door to maturity, but pride closes it.

Pride resists correction, holds on to control, and demands recognition. Pride can be subtle, sometimes looking like confidence, ambition, or even spiritual passion. If we do not deal with it, pride will stop our growth and harm our relationships.

Scripture says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble” (James 4:6). This means pride does not just slow our growth; it actually brings God’s opposition. That is a serious warning.

Whether it is not wanting to forgive, refusing to ask for help, or always needing to prove ourselves, pride keeps us from seeing our need for God and others. It makes us think we can do it all alone, which leads to spiritual stagnation.

That is why humility is not optional for believers. It is essential. Humility is the soil where maturity grows.

Practice Humility This Week

Humility is not just something we believe; it is something we practice. So how can we live with humility each day?

In your home:

Listen more and speak less. Apologize when needed. Put the needs of your spouse, children, or roommates before your own preferences. Ask yourself, “How can I serve them today?”

In your work:

Try not to promote yourself or compete with others. Celebrate your coworkers’ successes. Find ways to help without expecting credit. Let your actions show your integrity.

In your church:

Volunteer without looking for recognition. Respect the leaders God has given you. Encourage others in their gifts, even if they are different from yours. Remember, the body of Christ grows strong when everyone works together in love.

Reflection Questions:

In what areas of your life is God calling you to take a lower position and serve others?

How does pride show up in your thinking or behavior, and how can you surrender it to God?

What would it look like for you to follow Christ’s example of humility this week?

Walking in humility is not always easy, but it brings us closer to Christ. As you go through your week, remember: the One who served is the One who was exalted. When we follow His example and choose humility over pride, we grow in maturity and show His love to those around us.

Our world often celebrates self-promotion, individual achievement, and personal gain.
