While having a personal relationship with Christ is important, the Bible shows that spiritual maturity is not something we do alone. It is a community effort. One of the clearest signs of Christian maturity is unity in the body of Christ. Ephesians 4:13–16, the Apostle Paul describes what maturity looks like for the church: reaching unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God, growing into maturity, and becoming more like Christ. But he doesn’t place this responsibility on individuals in isolation. He paints a picture of believers together, working as one body, each part doing its work, speaking truth in love, and building one another up.

If we want to grow spiritually, we need to grow together. Let’s look at how unity is important in our journey toward maturity.

Unity as a Sign of Maturity

Paul says in Ephesians 4:13 that the goal is for “we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.” Notice he says we all. Maturity is not just about personal holiness. It is about being united in the truth of who Jesus is and walking together in that truth.

Unity shows us what God is like. The Trinity—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—shows perfect unity in diversity. Jesus also prayed in John 17 that His followers would be one, just as He and the Father are one. When we live in unity, we show the heart of God.

Unity does not mean we are all the same. We have different backgrounds, personalities, gifts, and viewpoints. But unity means we are committed to each other in love, focused on the truth of the Gospel, and working together to live and love like Christ. When a church is united, it shows the world God’s love and helps everyone grow.

Speaking the Truth in Love

One of the main ways we grow together is by “speaking the truth in love” (Ephesians 4:15). This is powerful. Truth without love can hurt people. Love without truth can be empty and confusing. But when we combine truth and love, we help the body of Christ grow.

As believers, we are called to help each other grow. This means encouraging each other in faith, keeping each other accountable, and gently correcting when needed. It also means being open to feedback with humility and grace.

Speaking the truth in love takes maturity. It means caring more about others’ growth and well-being than our own comfort. It means not gossiping or complaining, but going directly to someone with kindness and honesty. It also means choosing to restore relationships instead of just trying to be right.

When truth and love go together, they help bring real change. They make the body of Christ stronger, healthier, and more like Jesus.

Building Each Other Up in Christ

Paul says the church is like a body, “joined and held together by every supporting ligament,” with each part “doing its work,” so the body grows and builds itself up in love (Ephesians 4:16). This means every believer has a part to play in helping the whole community grow.

You are not only called to grow yourself, but also to help others grow. This could mean mentoring someone younger in faith, using your gifts to serve, encouraging someone who is struggling, praying with a friend, or just being present in your church community.

Every part of the body matters. When you are not present or involved, the whole body is affected. But when everyone does their part, the whole church becomes stronger and grows.

Spiritual maturity is not just about knowing the Bible or being personally devoted. It shows in how we love, serve, and help others grow. It is seen in our willingness to build each other up in Christ.

Application: Grow Together, Not Alone

So how do we put this into practice? Here are a few steps you can take this week:

Commit to Your Church Family:

Show up regularly and take part fully. Don’t just attend, but get involved. Look for ways to serve, encourage, and connect. Be someone who helps your local church stay healthy and united.

Invest in Someone Else’s Growth:

Who in your life could use encouragement or support in their spiritual journey? Maybe it is a new believer, a friend who is struggling, or someone who needs your prayers and presence. Take a step: reach out, listen, pray, and serve.

Speak the Truth in Love:

Is there a conversation you have been putting off? Ask God for wisdom, courage, and compassion to speak honestly and kindly. Also, be open to hearing the truth from others.

Celebrate Unity:

Thank God for the diversity in the body of Christ. Look for ways to bridge gaps and build stronger relationships. Remember, unity does not mean we are all the same. It means we are all connected to the same Lord and working toward the same purpose.

Reflection Questions:

How have you experienced growth through your church community?

Are there ways you’ve been isolating yourself from the body of Christ?

Who can you encourage or invest in this week to help them grow spiritually? We grow best when we grow together. Spiritual maturity is not just about becoming more like Christ on our own. It is about becoming more like Christ as a group. When we walk in unity, speak truth in love, and build each other up, we show the heart of Jesus and become the kind of church the world needs. Let’s commit to growing together and being united in maturity.

In our highly individualistic culture, people often see spiritual growth as something private, just between themselves and God.
