Week 8 Salvation: Why the Cross? Why Grace?

Posted on July 20, 2026 by Jessica Davis

THE MOST IMPORTANT MESSAGE YOU WILL EVER SHARE

If someone asked you, “What is the gospel?”—could you answer clearly, confidently, and biblically?

Many Christians struggle to articulate the gospel, not because they don’t believe it, but because they’ve never been taught how to explain it. Yet the gospel is the heart of Christianity. It is the message that saves, transforms, restores, and anchors our hope.

This week, we explore why salvation is necessary, why the cross was required, and why grace—not works—is the only way to be made right with God. We will also learn how to share our testimony with clarity and power.

Because if you understand the gospel, you can share the gospel. And if you can share the gospel, you can change a life forever.

THE HUMAN CONDITION: SIN AND SEPARATION

Before we can understand salvation, we must understand the problem salvation solves.

1. Sin Is Not a Mistake—It Is Rebellion

Ephesians 2:1–3 describes humanity as:

dead in sin

following the world

enslaved to desires

under judgment

Sin is not simply “messing up.” It is rejecting God’s authority and choosing our own way.

2. Sin Separates Us From God

Romans 3:23 says:

“All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”

Sin creates a relational, moral, and spiritual separation between humanity and God. We are not “basically good people who occasionally do bad things.” We are spiritually dead people who need resurrection.

3. Sin Brings Judgment

Romans 6:23 says:

“The wages of sin is death.”

Sin earns something. It produces something. It demands something.

Death is not just physical—it is spiritual and eternal.

4. Sin Is Universal

Every person—religious or irreligious, moral or immoral—stands guilty before God.

This is why salvation is not optional. It is essential.

THE HEART OF THE GOSPEL: ATONEMENT

If sin separates us from God, how can we be reconciled?

The answer is the atonement—the work Jesus accomplished on the cross to restore us to God.

1. Atonement Means “To Make Right”

In Scripture, atonement involves:

sacrifice

substitution

cleansing

reconciliation

The Old Testament sacrificial system pointed forward to a greater sacrifice—Jesus.

2. Jesus Is the Perfect Substitute

Romans 3:25 says:

“God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement.”

Jesus is:

fully God — able to bear infinite judgment

fully human — able to represent humanity

sinless — able to be a perfect sacrifice

He took our place. He bore our punishment. He paid our debt.

3. The Cross Satisfies God’s Justice

God is holy and just. He cannot ignore sin.

But God is also loving and merciful. He desires to save sinners.

The cross is where justice and mercy meet.

At the cross:

God’s justice is upheld

God’s wrath is satisfied

God’s love is revealed

God’s mercy is extended

4. The Resurrection Confirms the Atonement

The cross is the payment. The resurrection is the receipt.

If Jesus had stayed dead, His sacrifice would be meaningless. But He rose—proving His victory over sin and death.

WHY GRACE? WHY NOT WORKS?

Every religion in the world teaches some version of salvation by works:

do enough good, follow the rules, obey the rituals, earn God’s approval. Christianity stands alone in declaring: You cannot save yourself. God must save you.

1. Works Cannot Save Us

Ephesians 2:8–9 says:

“It is by grace you have been saved… not by works.”

Why not works?

Because:

our works are tainted by sin

our righteousness is insufficient

our efforts cannot erase guilt

our morality cannot change our nature

Trying to earn salvation is like trying to climb to the moon with a ladder.

2. Grace Means “Unmerited Favor”

Grace is not:

God helping those who help themselves

God rewarding good behavior

God overlooking sin

Grace is:

God giving us what we do not deserve

God rescuing us when we cannot rescue ourselves

God loving us while we were still sinners

Grace is not earned. Grace is received.

3. Grace Produces Humility

If salvation is by grace:

we cannot boast

we cannot compare

we cannot judge

we cannot take credit

Grace levels the playing field. Every Christian is a sinner saved by mercy.

4. Grace Produces Transformation

Grace does not excuse sin. Grace empowers holiness.

Ephesians 2:10 says:

“We are God’s workmanship… created in Christ Jesus to do good works.”

Works do not save us. But salvation produces works.

Grace changes:

our desires

our identity

our purpose

our destiny

THE BEAUTY OF THE GOSPEL: GOD DOES THE SAVING

Romans 3:21–26 is one of the clearest explanations of the gospel in Scripture.

It teaches us:

1. God Initiates Salvation

“But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known…”Romans 3:21

We do not climb up to God. God comes down to us.

2. God Provides the Righteousness We Lack

“This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ…”Romans 3:22

We do not earn righteousness. We receive it.

3. God Justifies the Guilty

“Justified freely by His grace…”Romans 3:24

Justification means:

declared righteous

forgiven

accepted

restored

4. God Demonstrates His Justice and Love

“He did this to demonstrate His righteousness…”Romans 3:25-26

The cross shows:

God takes sin seriously

God takes love seriously

God takes salvation seriously

5. God Saves Through Faith Alone

“He justifies those who have faith in Jesus.”Romans 3:26

Faith is not:

intellectual agreement

emotional feeling

religious activity

Faith is trusting Jesus alone for salvation.

THE GOSPEL IN FOUR SIMPLE MOVEMENTS

Here is a clear, simple way to explain the gospel:

1. Creation — You were made for relationship with God. You are not an accident. You were created with purpose.

2. Fall — Sin separates you from God. Sin is rebellion, not a mistake. It breaks relationship.

3. Redemption — Jesus died and rose to save you. He took your place. He paid your debt. He conquered death.

4. Restoration — You must respond with repentance and faith. Salvation is a gift. You receive it by trusting Jesus.

This is the gospel. This is the message that saves.

HOW TO SHARE YOUR TESTIMONY EFFECTIVELY

Your testimony is one of the most powerful tools you have for sharing the gospel.

People can argue with your theology. They cannot argue with your story.

Here is a simple, biblical framework for sharing your testimony clearly and effectively.

1. Before Christ — Who were you?

Share:

your struggles

your emptiness

your sin

your questions

your brokenness

Be honest. Be specific. Be human.

2. How You Met Christ — What changed?

Share:

how you heard the gospel

what convicted you

what opened your eyes

how you responded

Focus on Jesus—not on your effort.

3. After Christ — What difference has Jesus made?

Share:

how He changed your desires

how He healed your wounds

how He gave you purpose

how He is still transforming you

Your testimony is not about perfection. It is about transformation.

4. Keep it simple, short, and centered on Jesus

Avoid:

long details

theological jargon

self-focus

Aim for:

clarity

humility

authenticity

5. Practice your testimony

Write it out. Refine it. Share it with a friend. Be ready.

HOW TO SHARE THE GOSPEL WITHOUT BEING DEFENSIVE

When sharing the gospel, posture matters as much as content.

1. Be gentle – People are not projects. They are image-bearers.

2. Be clear – Avoid vague language. Explain the gospel simply.

3. Be confident – The gospel is the power of God. You are not responsible for results.

4. Be relational – People often need to belong before they believe.

5. Be patient – Conversion is the Spirit’s work.

6. Be prayerful – Pray before, during, and after conversations.

WHY THE GOSPEL IS GOOD NEWS

The gospel is not: good advice, good morals, good inspiration

The gospel is good news—a declaration of what God has done.

The gospel says:

You are more sinful than you realize.

You are more loved than you can imagine.

You cannot save yourself.

Jesus has done everything necessary to save you.

Salvation is a gift.

Grace is available.

Hope is real.

Eternity is secure.

This is why the gospel is the greatest message in the world.

WHY THE CROSS? WHY GRACE?

Why the cross?

Because sin is serious. Because justice is real. Because holiness matters. Because God is righteous. Because we cannot save ourselves. Because love required sacrifice.

Why grace?

Because we are helpless. Because we are broken. Because we are guilty. Because we are dead in sin. Because salvation must be a gift. Because God delights in mercy.

The gospel is not about what you do for God. It is about what God has done for you.

You are saved by grace. You are kept by grace. You are transformed by grace. You are empowered by grace. You are destined for glory by grace.

This is salvation. This is the gospel. This is why Jesus came. This is why we worship. This is why we share our story.
